High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell Fontelles held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Wednesday.

In a post on his Twitter account after the phone call, Borrell said, “Spoke today with Iranian Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian at his request ahead of the next round of JCPOA negotiations in Vienna tomorrow.”

“I conveyed a sense of urgency: we need to advance much quicker in the negotiations to restore the deal,” the EU diplomat added.

Delegations from Iran and the P4+1 (Russia, China, the UK, France and Germany) are going to proceed with the negotiations on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal in Vienna today.

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and the Group 5+1 and endorsed by the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

However, then-US president Donald Trump unilaterally pulled Washington out of the nuclear deal in May 2018 and reinstated the anti-Iranian sanctions that had been lifted by the deal.
