Memory foam came about early on in the 70’s when NASA started a development project intended to produce a material that could help alleviate the discomfort astronauts experienced during lift-off. NASA’s engineers were trying to produce a type of foam cushioning that would give soft support to the body and would also maintain its shape. And so, visco elastic memory foam was born. The unique properties of this foam allowed for uniform distribution of weight and the ability to easily adjust to body position changes. Tempur-Pedic introduced the first memory foam beds in 1992, to great success.
A visco memory foam mattress isn’t what you would label as a “soft” mattress. It molds and contours to your body, and the contouring effect spreads that weight over more of the sleeping surface, thereby eliminating pressure points. On a typical inner-spring bed, pressure points can create discomfort and make you toss and turn, so visco’s contouring nature will allow for a better night’s rest. An additional feature of this foam is the “open cell” make-up, which allows the bed to “breathe”. For the most part, a memory foam bed won’t retain your body heat and moisture, leaving the sleeping area comfortable the whole night.
Visco foam is also very resistant to mildew and bacteria. This is good news for allergy sufferers who sometimes discover that they have problems with spring mattresses over time. One more nice benefit of memory foam beds is that motion transfer is limited so that your movement will not wake up your significant other. As you would imagine, this leads to an even more peaceful night’s sleep.
It’s important to note that good memory foam beds won’t need a box-spring below them for added support. Typically the only reason you would want to use a box spring is to put the mattress at a height that you’re happy with.
Be on the lookout for lesser quality imitations that don’t come with a first-class warranty. If the bed you are thinking about buying is not made in the US, then make sure to really do your research to ensure you’re getting a quality visco elastic foam bed. This suggestion applies even when just looking at a memory foam mattress pad as well.
